CIPRÌ & MARESCO PGM 2: (IN)HUMAN URGES
The body, in all its abominable candor, is one of the poetic pillars of Ciprì & Maresco's cinema. Tragically devoid of any female presence, their films frame with sardonic ridicule the violent loneliness of men. Undressed, both literally and metaphorically, the male body is the lone signifier of (in)human urges that are always frustrated, crudely demanded but never fulfilled. The appalling body and its unspeakable impulses are not so much filmed, but structure the vision and cinema of Ciprì & Maresco. The rubble they're filmed in is not mere background but an unflattering reflection of the human ruins they incarnate. In the cosmically pessimistic universe of Ciprì & Maresco, humanity is doomed, for even life already resembles death. A bitter laughter is the lapidary seal on this dejected, (post-)human landscape.
