DIFFERENT IMAGES

This program pairs JOJOLO with Alile Sharon Larkin's 1982 feature, A DIFFERENT IMAGE. Set in Los Angeles, the narrative centers on Alana, an art student, whose incorporation of Afro-diasporic cultural consciousness elaborates a critique of how Eurocentric patriarchal visual standards construct and crossover between commercialized media and intimate relationships. A DIFFERENT IMAGE honors a young Black woman's multivalent interiority and autonomy over perception. Lebert Bethune & John Taylor JOJOLO 1966, 22 min, 16mm. Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Alile Sharon Larkin A DIFFERENT IMAGE 1982, 52 min, 16mm. Archival print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.
