MULTI-MEDIA RESOURCE CENTER PGM 3: GAY LIBERATION ON 16MM

From the late 1960s through the early 1980s, politically active gay and lesbian filmmakers like Arthur J. Bressan, Jr. and the Mariposa Film Group made didactic agitprop documentaries and narrative films on the liberation movement taking place in the streets around them. But alongside these works were smaller – in scope, length, and film gauge – and often more experimental works that shed light on the ideology of gay liberation in a less didactic mode. The two films in this program directed by Laird Sutton for the National Sex Forum take the form of casual, unstructured conversations between trios of gay men and lesbians. The others – which were, apart from FREEDOM DAY PARADE, distributed by the Multi-Media Resource Center – use documentary and satire to explore the concerns and culture of the gay liberation movement.
