Notes on Breakcore x Bass Boss (2006)

Directed by Bertram Könighofer & David Kleinl

31 minutes

For decades, breakcore has lurked in the shadows of the electronic underground - a bastard offspring of jungle, breakbeat, gabber, and hardcore techno. As it refused to go away, music press increasingly adopted it as yet another tool for categorisation. Look closer, though, and the "genre" turns out to be less a style than a strategy: a hybrid that raids and reassembles everything in reach - punk, free jazz, classical, metal, soul, '80s pop and rock, hip-hop, and more. Somehow it never got fully absorbed by the industry. It stayed uncategorizable, chameleonic, sprawling from noise-drenched dancefloor chaos to the outer edges of the electronic avant-garde.
